woohoo. my TA gave me the green light for my research proposal!
i am gonna be studying the dental fricative of the Singapore English language. what does that mean?
do you notice how 'tree' and 'three', 'den' and 'then' sound similar? the technical term for it is "homophones". homo=same, phones=sounds. this is because in Singapore English, we do not have a noted distinction between the dental fricative [eth] [th-] and the plosive stop [t] [d]. our consonant chart has a reduced number of "characters" as compared to the british english (where we are stemmed from).
fascinating no? i love the fact that i'm one of the first few singaporeans to study linguistics in the University of Calgary. makes my research a very wonderfully exciting read.
