Singapore is a safe country because:1. There are common people on the streets anytime of the day. - You might not know it, but the person sitting next to you on the bus likes to 'people-watch' as much as you do. Therefore, muggers, molesters, rapists and all those bad bad people would not do anything because people are watching.
2. The streets are well-lit, with a directionally-lit street lamp every 50m. (Calgary's streets lamps aren't directional, a classmate told me that 40% of the light from a street lamp is directed upwards) A well-lit road makes for a more socially trusting person.
3. Communities are built close together, Singapore is designed that way (due to the lack of space and/or other reasons).
4. An increased mobility via the automobile (that's what they call 'cars' here) or "bus no. 11" (read: let your feet do the walking) leads to a higher density and probability of you passing a car or person in middle of your journey. - increased social interaction.
5. Singaporeans have a shared common interest: food. (even when we don't have shared religious beliefs)
I just applied what I've been learning in the University of Calgary's Urban Studies 253 course to the question why Singapore is a safe country. See, I have been studying... Then again, there isn't much to do here. oh well. Miss you guys.
and i know you've been waiting for this.... a picture update!
i've officially made the 15th of every month MAIL DAY. the first batch has landed safely. if you haven't recieved yours, it's prolly because i don't have your snail mail address, or you have to wait till the next 15th! mailing is preetttty expensive here. it's C$1.64 each letter (so +-S$2).
